  • Replacing dead Tivo HD question

My Series 3 HD Tivo appears to have died (it says Welcome...Powering Up and then goes blank). I have a spare Maxtor 500GB Sata hard drive I would like to replace it with, but I don't know if I can just put the Maxtor in the Tivo. I don't care about the programs I lost on the dead HD.

Do I need to install any special Tivo software on the new Maxtor drive or do anything else to prepare it for use before installing it?

    Thanks,

    Peter

Yes, you need to install software. Blank drives do not work. See:

Thanks. However, I noticed that my DVR Expander unit is still working, and I can still transfer shows to my other Tivos (I guess they are also stored on the Expander unit??). I will follow up on sending my unit it with the new hard drive to have it formatted for use in the Tivo, and will mention the Expander since I don't know if I should send it in too....

Your unit is stuck on powering up yet you are able to access the shows on your external?

I just go to another Tivo in my house and the "dead" Tivo appears in the Now Playing list, and I am able to transfer shows from it. I assume the shows were stored on the My DVR expander external drive that is connected to the dead Tivo...

And when you unplug the external drive, what happens to the list?

when I disconnect the external drive it disappears from the Now Playing list on my other Tivo.

Somehow, could your TV be set to some other input where you're seeing yet another TiVo in your system?
