  • IR Blaster Problem?

Help! I'm having problems changing channels with my Toshiba RS-TX20 (with WeaKnees Tivo updgrade). The problem is sporadic in nature. Sometimes everything works fine. Other times, no.

The RX-TX20 uses an IR blaster attached to a Pioneer BD-V1100 cable box.
http://www.pioneerdigital.com/pdf/voyager1000manual.pdf. The 2 Head TiVo/RF IR Blaster is positioned over the remote sensor window indicated by the manual as well as visually verified.

The problem usually occurs when Tivo is set up to change a channel and record a program. The Tivo box information will indicate the correct show is being recorded, but the cable box doesn't always change to the correct channel. Like I said before, sometimes everything works fine, and the correct channel is chosen. Many other times, the wrong program gets recorded, which is becoming increasingly frustrating. I'll sometimes resort to manually changing to the correct channel before something is set to record, just to be sure the correct channel is selected.

When I use the remote just to change channels, it most often works. Sometimes entering a channel greater then 100 doesn't work, though. Strange. My point is that the channel changing problem usually occurs with a scheduled recording, and less often when just changing channels manually. I'm not sure why.

The channel changing problem hasn't always been the case. When I first got the RX-TX20, everything worked fine. The problem seems to have developed this past year.

I've tried cleaning the front of the cable box, cleaning the heads of the IR blaster, putting paper over the IR blaster to cut down on stray light, etc., but nothing seems to work.

    What should I try next?

You can try using the same IR code, but set on "slow" in the cable box setup area.

Also, since you don't need to see the cable box, you can try putting it in a box with just the IR blasters - often that makes for better communication.
    Been here a long time . . .
