  • How do they know!!?

It has been made very clear that opening a TiVo box during the warranty period to upgrade the capacity voids the warranty. Here is my question:

How does TiVo know I have opened the box?
(Assuming of course that I de-upgrade it before I return it to TiVo for warranty work.)

    Is TiVo spying on me?

Is there some type of witness mark, break wire, paint strip, etc. that provides evidence that I have trespassed into the sanctuary of the box innards if I ever have to get warranty work done after an upgrade?

When you dial a unit in or connect by network, it transmits data, including information about your hard drive.

do they really keep our tivo info on record?
if so, then it only makes sense to use an external usb drive? or would that be
      'seen' also??

The "information" that it transmits is just the size and serial number of your drive, not what is recorded on it. TiVo gets aggregated data about recordings (unless you opt out), but not specific data.

would tivo peeps know you have more storage because of an external drive add-on or because you opened it up and installed a bigger drive?

Sure; an external will come up as a secondary drive.
