  • Can I use Series 2 machine for anything if I

    no longer subscribe to Tivo?

I know, the obvious answer is to hook it up to the TV and find out, but I'm an old lady and so TV-challenged that the hookup process might take me hrs, time I'm willing to spend but if the Tivo then acted like a dumb dead box, I wouldn't know if it was really a dumb dead box or I just have it hooked up wrong.

If I got it hooked up correctly, without a Tivo subscription, I won't be able to see program information, times & shows, etc? Right? Wrong?

Quit snickering at my ignorance. I can swap hard drives in my computer but when it comes to the television, whatever minimal sense I have of digital equipment goes out the window. I still have to unplug/switch/plug cables to disconnect the cable box and use my DVR Spent $40 on cables, about 4 hrs of time, finally gave up.

Series 2 TiVos (except for those from Pioneer and Toshiba) will not function without a TiVo subscription.

Most movies are copy protected, so converting them to a format that the TiVo can read may not be easy. You can, however, move non-protected content to the TiVo.

Somewhat along these lines--does TiVo have a line in to hook up a VCR, transfer to the harddrive, and then transfer to my computer so i can edit/burn?

You can copy from a VCR to Series2 standalone TiVos and then copy to your PC, yes.
