  • Series 2 Dual Tuner still dead after new P.S.

We had a wicked lightning strike that took out half a dozen pieces of equipment. My Tivo was at the top of my repair list and after a look at your forum decided that the power supply was blown which made sense seeing there is NO output or activity at all. The front lights were both on dim constantly. So I ordered and received a new power supply but after installing it the only difference is that only the red light is on normal constantly but no output or fan turning or hard drive activity that I can see. I can't really afford to keep throwing money at this thing but wonder what options I might have besides trashing it and buying a new and improved unit. Is there any possibility of getting a refund on this new power supply? Thanks.

Sounds like it might have a bad motherboard, but are you sure the white Parlex cable is properly connected?

Then it's likely to be a bad motherboard, sorry to say.

You may be able to call TiVo and have them do a swap, for a fee.

If you don't have lifetime service, though, you should probably just get a new unit:

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. Right down to replacing the PS with one from weaKnees.

I also came to the conclusion that I should just buy a new unit.

Here is my question, if I buy a new DT TiVo and it is the same model number, can I swap the drive from my old unit into my new unit and keep all my old programs and season passes and everything? With the service being tied to the motherboard, should I boot the new unit and complete the setup before swapping drives?

          Any help would be appreciated!

While you'll be able to use the drive since it has the right software installed, you'll need to do a "Clear and delete everything" once it's in the new unit in order to get the drive to function. That's how it re-serializes to the new motherboard. So you won't be able to view any of your previous recordings or re-use any of your previous settings.

That's what I was afraid of. I was really hoping there was a way to keep at least the season passes.

TiVo should give you the option/ability to backup or transfer your season passes just like you can backup your contacts on a cell phone..

I haven't tried it, but at one point, people were saying that with KidZone enabled, there was a way to do that. But if the old unit is already toast, you really can't pull that off even if it's available.
