It shouldn't be hdf, right? If you have four devices, they're hda, hdb, hdc, and hdd.

They showed up as HDE, F, G, H (CD, blank drive, tivo1, tivo2)

I assume you are referring to this:

All instructions assume the location of your c: drive (when used) to be in the primary master, or hda, location.

Location on IDE chain Actual command to be typed in lieu of hdX, hdY, hdZ, and hdZZ

          Primary Master hda
          Primary Slave hdb
          Secondary Master hdc
          Secondary Slave hdd

Substitute in Linux commands Drive Description
          hdX Original TiVo drive
hdY Second Original TiVo drive (two-drive units only)
          hdZ Target (New) TiVo drive
hdZZ Second Target (New) TiVo drive (two-drive upgrades only)
hdW FAT PC drive (almost always 'hda')

I didn't get HDA, HDB, HDC, HDD, Etc...

          So for this command:

          mount /dev/hdW1 /mnt

          I put in mount /dev/hde1 /mnt

          I also tried mount /dev/hde /mnt

          Neither worked =(

Then you should be trying hdf, as you said earlier, not hde, right?

              ok...we screwed up big time...

formatted the wrong drive...in this case it was drive #2 from the tivo.

any tips what the heck to do now???

Do I put my orginal 40 (drive 1) back in the unit and see if it boots the drive??

                  New possibility.....

my parents have a directivo (single 40gb drive) Can I back up their 40 gig drive and restore it to my 40 gig drive??

Then, use the add a drive process?

Is there something to be concerned about as far as serial numbers, Etc between the two units.

Mine was made 19 May 03
                  theirs was made 26- Apr-04

                  ???

If the models are identical, sure.

Nope they weren't...I get live programming but it won't record anything.

Both Series 2 but...the first 3 digits of the SN were not even close.

Do you know if Directv will de-authorise my old subscription and move it to this one?

You should be able to do that, but you will likely need to buy a new access card from DIRECTV.

Found out the mobo had a SATA header on it so it off set the IDE drive letters by the number of possible sata drives...

ok....finally got a NEW CARD FOR THE PHILIPS DVR (dad's old one) and move his programming to a 160 gig drive, and also added a second 160 gig drive...shows 280 hrs recording time now...and it records and does the 30 second skip and all is good except for the old 160 drive from the huges box...if that can be recovered...only time and searching the net will tell I guess....

                          So a bitter sweet ending...

                          Thanks all for your help!
