  • Need help with Hughes DVR80

We had a rash of storms on the east coast last weekend, and even though I have a surge protector, I unplugged the dvr and disconnected the satellite in cable for the whole weekend, just to be safe. Monday, when I reconnected everything and started the unit, it was unable to find the signal. I checked all connections, found nothing wrong, and rebooted. Still no signal. After another re-boot, it went directly to satellite setup and still found no signal. I was able to go to now playing list, but not live tv. When I got home from work I rebooted once more, hoping for a miracle. Again, went directly to satellite setup and would go no further and calls to directv for assistance did not help. At this point I left the unit off while at work and when I came home would reboot once more. Now the dvr is freezing at the "almost there" message. The picture on the tv snaps off, but the dvr green light is still on. Directv's suggestion was to unplug unit, remove coax cable and then re-power. This does not work. At this point I have caved in and will be getting one of the directv plus things that they have now. My sister has one and it is hard to operate after tivo. I'm hoping it will be temporary. Does anyone have any idea of what is wrong with my tivo unit? Hard drive? Power supply? If it's one of these I can probably replace it myself. I'm sorry to lose my recorded programs, but even more sorry to lose tivo.

    Thanks for any ideas...

Hard to know for sure. The first problems sound like satellite signal problems -- maybe with your dish or wiring, and maybe with your TiVo satellite inputs.

The second problem sounds like a bad hard drive. It's possible that as the drive was dying, it was unable to acquire sat signal, so I'd recommend a "replace" kit first:
