  • New single drive = Flashing Green/Amber lights

I bought and installed a new single 160gb (replaced a single 80gb) for my series 2 Tivo (TCD-240080). Install was easy...went to power the unit on for the first time and I got no video output and there were green & amber flashing (rapid pulsating) on the front LEDs, but the drive started (because I could hear it). Unplugged and replugged a few more times and got the same situation. Took out the new drive and put in the old drive again and the same thing happened (flashing green/amber lights but drive spins). I inspected the data cable and it is fine.

I know that the front LEDs, the hard drive, the fan are all getting power. I plugged in my USB wireless adapter and that DOES NOT get power for some reason. Could this be a bad power supply even though most of the components are getting power? Could the new drive have blown my power supply?

Thoughts/suggestions? I have lifetime so throwing out and buying new isn't an option (at the moment)...thanks!

You may very likely have a bad power supply. But have you checked the flat white cable connecting the power supply to the motherboard? You should try removing and carefully reinserting that cable.

If the fan is getting power though, and the power from the fan comes thru a connection on the motherboard which is powered from a connection from the power supply, do you think it's still the power supply? can sections of a power supply just go bad while other sections still work?

I checked the white cable from the power supply to the motherboard...re-inserted both ends...no change.

Sure - we often see bad power supplies that still spin fans (and drives).

replaced the power supply with a brand new one and I'm still getting the flashing green and amber lights on the front...drive still spins (I hear it)...fan still is going (I see it)...USB ports don't power up when I plug in my external wifi still...so what do you think it is now...dead motherboard?

do you take returns beyond the 30 day limit given certain circumstances?

Yes - that sounds like a dead motherboard. Has it been 30 days? It looks like about two weeks.

OK - I thought you meant the power supply.
