  • transfer lifetime service to working tivo?

newbie here. I have a series 2 with lifetime service. hard drive failed a few months back. since then i've been using a different series 2 (on monthly service). i'd like to transfer my lifetime service from the dead unit to the working one, but Tivo says NO. any way to load the drive from the working unit in my PC and change the service number? i tried just swapping the hard drives, and it loads up okay but can't connect to the tivo service.

    thanks for your help.

Nope - lifetime service is tied to the ESN (electronic serial number) in the motherboard. No way to change that.

How about moving the working drive to the lifetime unit? Are they the same model?

      tried that

I moved the working drive from the monthly unit to the dead unit. they are both series 2 and the 1st 3 numbers of the ESN match (I read somewhere that that matters). When I did , the unit booted up okay, but then I got an error screen that said there is a problem with the service and I would not be able to record or watch recorded shows. I assumed the ESN was also stored someplace on the drive. Any ideas? Thanks!

That's right - error #51 (hardware error). You now need to do a "clear and delete everything" to serialize the drive to the new motherboard that's running it.
