  • Replacement Drive, no DST

I just replaced the hard drive in my RCA DVR40 with a weaknees 80 gb drive. Unit works fine, except the time is one hour off. I suspect that it has something to do with the DST change.
I've got all the settings for DST set correctly (Eastern time zone, observes DST), yet under system information it says I am still in standard time.
I forced a call last night to see if it would download a newer version of the O/S, but it hasn't changed, even after a reboot.
The O/S version number listed is 6.2-01-2-321. Do I need to call DirecTV to have them force an update?
Does the O/S version number listed above not have the DST fix?
Finally, I'm a little weary to upgrade to 6.3 b/c of problems I've heard, yet I never put my TiVo into standy, so I may never have issues. Before replacement everything worked OK, so I assume it shouldn't be a problem.
    Thanks!

You can wait it out; on 4/6 it should be back to normal. Or, you can call DTV for a s/w download...but you are right, there are reasons to be wary of 6.3.

Well unless I unplug the phone line the unit is eventually going to update to 6.3.
I've heard that 6.3f fixes the rebooting issue. But like I said before, I used the unit with the old drive up until mid-February and never had problems with it rebooting, so I suspect that an eventual upgrade to 6.3 won't be a problem.

Just called DTV to have them force a download. The woman told me that the RCA DVR40 will not accept a forced software download. Sounds like B/S to me.
I've been having it call in every day but it doesn't seem to be downloading anything. It's not failing when dialing in...just not getting any new data. Is there something else I can do?

In any event, isn't the time right now? I think the DST issue is now passed since we're back to when the time would normally change.

Old DST rules were to spring forward at 2:00 am the first Sunday in April, which this year is 4/6.
I wonder if I just turned DST off if that would work.
But is it true that the RCA DVR40 will not accept a forced download?

The unit should absolutely accept a *download* but we don't really know that there is such a thing as a *forced* download.

How exactly do software downloads work? Do they come from the satellite or over the phone? What does dialing in actually do? If I called DTV and told them to send the software update down, does the unit still need to call in? I just want to try and understand how it all works so that if a DTV rep tells me otherwise I can correct them.

The software generally comes via satellite, and just sits on your machine. Then, after a dial-in authorizes the upgrade, the software installs. So you need both - satellite access, and a phone line.

So forcing daily call-ins won't do anything since the software needs to come down from the satellite.
If a unit's software is out-of-date will it request a software download when it calls in?

The satellite sends it down every so often, so you first need your machine to catch one of those downloads.
