  • My dead Tivo TCD540040

I have a Tivo (Model # TCD540040) which I recently bought a power supply and Upgrade Kit (160GB HD) for my Tivo (Order #481180). Well I found out with my brother-in-laws help that my main board, (video board) might be toast. My HD still spins up when directly connected to my old power supply, but only if nothing is connected to the main board via IDE or using the flat cable from the power supply. None of the lights come on when plugged in and the fan doesn't budge.

I was reviewing your forum and found that some other folks have had a similar issue with their TCD540040, Weaknees was able to private message them a quote on the part price. Is there anyway to find out how much that part is through Weaknees? I hear Tivo charge customers $149 for a refurbished Tivo Series 2 tuner model.

I've looked at buying a used TCD540040 on eBay and I would plan on stripping it of the video board and replacing it with mine (granted I may have a new service number) I just was wondering if you guys would recommend this or not... and if not, why?

Also, since I bought the power supply for the TCD540040 model and don't plan on using it, can I return the product and get my money back? I'd like to use the Upgrade Kit still as I plan to try to get my Tivo up and in working order soon. Do you need to send me an RMA number or can I send it back directly to you guys?

Your thoughts and help would be appreciated!

Actually, we don't have replacement motherboards for that model. As far as we know, TiVo is your only option.
    Been here a long time . . .

Tivo has recommended that I send back in my system for a refurbished unit which is a duplicate of our system now... however everything on the drive will not be transfered & I'd have to pay $149 for it. OR I could go and buy a new Tivo and they would swap over our lifetime membership info onto the new box.

I've opted to buy a used Tivo on eBay (rather cheap I must say) and replace the actual part which is busted (the video board) and go from there. If I can't get it working in about a week or so I just might and go purchase a new Tivo box and have that lifetime membership carried over onto the new box.

I guess Tivo has stopped selling the Lifetime memberships and customers that have them will have until July 1st, 2008 to carry over their lifetime memberships. Something I'm not to happy about and I might just have to take a more in-depth look into what this is all about.

I sent back my Tivo power supply today after I got the RMA # in my email and so it's on it's way back to Weaknees (which I must say arrived freaking fast! Thanks Weaknees!) I can't wait to pop in the replacement video board and bring my current Tivo back to life so that I can put the upgrade kit into it! Just giving you folks an update of the situation.
