History:
Two Tivos, both Sony T60s with single 40GB drive.
Primary - Upgraded drive installed in family room
Secondary - Original drive in master bedroom (rarely used and is sometimes left unplugged for weeks)
Primary system's original drive failed a few years ago. I was able to replace it before it was completely dead with an 80GB (connected both drives to my Linux system and used dd command). 80GB worked fine for years but then last week, the Tivo went to a black screen. I saw the signs of the impending failure and had a replacement 250GB drive waiting. I downloaded the mfstools CD image (from another website) and attempted the backup and restore from the old drive to the new. No joy. The old drive is dead beyond recovery. I then pulled the drive from my secondary Tivo system and used it to perform the backup from it's drive to the new drive. Success. I installed the new drive in the primary system and powered it on. System booted fine and I could watch TV. I followed the upgrade instructions for moving the drive from one Tivo to another. Clear and Delete. All is looking very good at this point. It's 3AM and I had to go to bed. I get up this morning and the system needs to go through guided setup. Next, next, next, zip code, next, satellite signal test, next, acquiring information from satellite. Things are looking good. At 28%, the system stopped. I figure no problem. The secondary system hasn't been connected to a phone line in years so I figured this might take a while. An hour later and it is still at 28%. This ain't looking good.
I am at work now and I don't know if it ever completed. The new drive is a 250GB DB35 Seagate. What could possibly be the problem?
