  • hdparm question

On a different website http://coffee.sdsc.edu/rcw/tivo_upgrade/ I found an option for aggressive power management, and acoustic settings.

Supposedly, if after entering the command to copy from the original tivo hard drive to the new hard drive.. if you entered

    hdparm -k 1 -B 1 -M 128 /dev/sdX

where X is the letter of your new drive.
supposedly the end result would be

-k 1 = keep settings after drive is powered off.
-B 1 = set most aggressive power management mode.
-M 128 = set acoustic management to as quiet as possible.

does the version of MFSTool that weeknees uses have support for the hdparm command.. does weeknees even suggest using it?

personally I'd rather use the instructions that you provide.. only because of the number of good reviews i've heard about weeknees.. not saying that any place else is bad.. but .. this is my first time trying to upgrade a tivo.

    thoughts? suggestions?
    thanks in advance
    Andrew

All drives that we used are tuned for use in DVRs. The hdparm command has nothing to do with any TiVo-specific application. It is drive firmware change.

using the mfstools software that weaknees has posted.. if i used the hdparm command that i listed in the previous post..

what would be the worst thing that would happen if i tried?

      destroy the drive?

sorry if that sounds dumb.. but i just would prefer not to hose a hard drive if i don't need to :-)

hard drive is western digital 250 gig ata drive (not SATA) i just got it from Circuit City a month ago.

if you don't know .. that is not a problem..

You can't do any damage trying that command.

:-( I forgot to try the hdparm command when I was setting up the new hard drive... but on the bright side .. everything else went smooth. I just followed the instructions on this website and was up and running in no time.

          thanks for creating the instructions.
          :-)
