  • Tivo stuck in reboot hell

I have a series 2, toshiba rs-tx20. I opened it up to remove the dvd player because a dvd was endlessly spinning. Afterwards, the tivo would not boot past the "Coming up soon" screen, going into a reboot loop. I tried many different things, like using MFStools to temporarily enlarge the swap partition, etc, but nothing seems to be working. I even tried a friends Series 2 hdd. Now my tivo spends 3 minutes on the first screen (and repeats) and I cannot even do a kickstart (holding down pause accomplishes nothing).

At this point, I am thinking the cpu, mobo or some component has met is end. But before I throw in the towel, I wanted to check here for any last thoughts.

You can't use a different Series2 drive in your Toshiba as a test.

Have you tested the drive to be sure it is good? Have you reloaded the software onto your drive to ensure it isn't software corruption?

If you have done these things, and you have the problem you describe with the DVD burner plugged in and with it unplugged, then I agree that you may have a motherboard problem.

After a suggestion from another forum (Tivo Community), I tried InstantCake. Wow!! Very impressive. I cooked a spare harddrive in just a couple minutes and had my TiVo back up and running. Amazing!
