  • TiVo® HD DVR jumpy picture - reboot frequently

I have the TiVo® HD DVR It gets a jumpy picture kind of like it is losing every third frame. This is most notacable with any panning of cameras or motion on screen. I have had TiVo tech help have me unplug and re plug to reset it. First time it lasted about a week and started again. The next time they had me plug it directly into the wall foregoing all surge suppressors. That reset has worked about a week. I am expecting it to start to screw up any time now. Oddly the tech team supervisor told me that these should not be plugged into any surge suppressor or even the $300 Monster power line conditioners. HELP!?!?!?!

If you replay a bad segment, are the problems identical?

Yes it does even replaying live TV or playing a recording.

Then it's not the drive, and not likely the power.

So it's most likely the incoming line or the CableCARDs, but could be the on-board tuners.

Can you isolate it to one tuner?

Does anyone else want to take a stab at this?

First thing to do is to get the cable company back to swap out the CableCARDs.

                  Same here

I am having the exact problem with a hughes SD DVR-40 but on certain channels only. TLC, Fox sports west (692) and Knbc Los Angeles channel 4. At 1st it used to be just during commercials, now its all the time. As you say.. camera angles and the speed of the video seems to be an issue. My pictures flickers near the top and the picture frame sometimes rolls (vertical hold thing). I am running a battery backup and a monster power conditioner. Guess I need to try and go direct as you say.

Same channels on a different box (non-dvr) are fine.

I have swapped tuners, used different inputs/outputs and various numbers of these and nothing changes it. Going to change power cord to direct and report back.

                    No luck here

Ok.. had it plugged into just the battery backup... not the monster conditioner. Anyway.. still does the same thing directly in the wall outlet.
It is at the point where channel 692 is unwatchable. My drive is about a year old and about 3 months after I replaced it, this problem began. The vendor I bought the drive stated that the drive is probably bad. This was 8 months or so ago. Problem is slowly getting worse over time for these channels only. I can't see why a bad drive would exhibit this problem on only a few channels. I do have a backup 40 gig drive to try. I guess that is the next step

That does sound like more of a motherboard problem, but swapping the drive is a good test, so give it a shot.

Thanks for the note..... did not mean to hijack the thread but this problem seems to be very rare as this is the second thread I have found bout this problem. Are we still waiting for the OP to get the cable cards swapped?

I hope it is not my motherboard as I don't really want to get into that repair. Hard drives are much easier to deal with. Still trying to figure out why ony certain channels and not all. And if mother board, again why just certain channels. Seems like it is a transponder thing. Trying to see if the channels I have are on the odss or even s but a list I downloaded does not have my locals there. My dish is a round dual lnb and I am running am 8 way switch of which I am only using 3 lines (2 to tivo and 1 to the bedroom sat box.)

I will try my backup drive tonight and see what happens.

                        Thanks

If you have a DirecTV TiVo and not a cable unit like the original poster, you're really in a pretty different situation. For DirecTV TiVos, especially given their age, satellite tuner problems are fairly common.

Yes, Directivo... at about 5 years now and second HD, so a different beast but sounded like a similar problem. In any event, I hope both of us (the OP and myself) find the solution. There is a place that repairs these units for about $100 and I may give them a try if my backup HD does not do the trick.

                            Thanks for the help

I think you have a bad tuner. When you see pixellation, try pausing that channel and changing tuners (down on the directional pad on your remote) and then try a different channel that pixellates. If you can isolate the problem to one tuner, then you can just get that tuner repaired. See:
