  • Tivo series 2 stand alone and DirecTV config

Oh, this may be a dumb question, but I'm stumped and didn't see a simple solution. I love my standalone Tivo. Used it for years with Comcast cable - simple analog packages. I was able to (a) quickly/easily change channels (b) watch one station and record another at same time. Now I got Directv, which I love more then Comcast. *But* Tivo not working as good.

    (a) Channel changing sucks: Using the two IR cables in front of Directv receiver to change channels. Long delay... slow, sluggish performance. I called Directv and asked if they have a receiver they could send me with a "serial" port to connect to Tivo to change channels - but they didn't have anything to offer.

    (b) Splitting signal: I can't split the coax from dish - one side into Tivo and one into Directv receiver. Doesn't work like the analog cable. How can I watch one station and record another with standalone Tivo?

Maybe there is something obvious I'm missing. Probably, purchase one of those old/refurb directivo units? Or settle for Directv's current DVR. Either of those solutions would be $150 - $300.

Thanks for any input or advice. Much appreciated.

There is nothing that you are missing. Current DIRECTV receivers lack serial control, and you can't split satellite cables like you can DIRECTV signals. You would have to run a new line from your dish down AND get a different receiver. You might consider a DVR with DIRECTV built-in. Those can record two shows at the same time, so long as you have two lines down from your dish. See:
