Older TV/Tivo - record one, watch another

We have an old TV without a/v outlets, only the cable connection. We had been using an old series one Tivo which could be turned off, and were therefore able to turn the Tivo "off" while it was recording one show, and watch another show through the TV tuner. Now we have purchased a series 2 Tivo, and have not been able to do this. We can hook to an old VCR if that would help. Any suggestions? We miss this feature.

Your VCR may have a similar feature, depending on its inputs and outputs; you'd need to check the VCR manual.
