  • restarting/resetting

I have a hughes dvr Model SD-DVR 40. The unit was periodically freezing and resetting. I read the FAQ's and the trouble shooting pages on your web page and felt it was the hard drive going. I ordered a new replacement hard drive and installed it. After about 2 or 3 days it started doing the same thing. Now when it restarts it gets to the channel screen and the restarts again. After the second restart the screen goes blank and I have no control over the box. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this and solutions. Thanks

Is your unit running software version 6.3e? If so, are you putting the unit in standby? Are you finding that the unit reboots on particular channels?

      Yes. It is 6.3e-01-2-151

Your problem may be related to that software. It would explain why everything worked fine for a few days, until it downloaded again. You should not put your unit in standby and see if you can determine whether the reboots occur only on certain stations.

I spoke to Direct tv. They had me do a full system reboot which supposedly will reformat the drive. They said if that doesn't work I will need a new box. My question is how will a new box fix their software issue. What are your thoughts on this? Should I look to replace the box if the re-format doesn't work?

The person you spoke with just isn't aware of the issues out there, apparently.

My two near-new WeaKnees Seagate drives with 6.2a went bonkers after updating to 6.3e. After three weeks I had WeaKnees "Prep a Replacement "A" Drive" found at http://www.weaknees.com/misc.php which restored them to 6.2. No further problems.

Just make sure you don't connect the phone line - that would authorize the update back to 6.3e . . .

Thanks for the info. Will they be able to update the drive I just bought from them or will I have to buy another new one?

on another note. I just did the reformat option and it has a message that says this could take up to 1 hour. It also says not to unplug it. It is almost 2 hours and the message has not changed. What should I do? Let it go overnight or am I able to pull the plug and restart it? I just bought the 280 hr harddrive.

it looks like in the short term, the total reset worked. I'll wait to see what happens in the long run. Thanks for all of your help on this.
