  • Getting recordings off DirecTV HR-10-250

Equipment: Hughes/DirecTV HR10-250 (Tivo, not the bad new DTV box).

I am about to upgrade my hard disk to a 400Gb I got from WK, and I want to capture some of my saved programs before I pull out the old disk.

I have an RCA DVD recorder and can use the "Record to VCR" option, which is dreadfully slow and of course only records 480i programming. Is there any way I can get shows off my HR10-250 onto my laptop where I can burn them to DVD at a higher speed?

The programs are encrypted on your HR10, so offloading with the RCA or equivalent is your best bet. Alternatively, you can send the unit to us and we can copy the whole drive onto the new one for you.

I think my HR10 got hit with the 6.3e software problem, where it is constantly rebooting itself after an initial incomplete startup cycle.

Can you guys pull recordings off my HDD (for restoring on one of your replacement HDDs) if the software isn't working?

Unfortunately it is not possible to move recordings on a drive with an earlier software version.

That has a lot of advantages. How long does it take and how much does it cost? Thanks,
          Roger

If you order a new drive, then we will copy the data from the old to the new for $79--it is the "Deluxe Upgrade Service" see:

I already ordered one (400Gb) - I got it, its still in the box waiting for me to figure this out. If I send it back with my old drive, is the offer still good?

Just a thought: is there any way I can hook my old and new drives up to a linux system and copy the contents from one to the other? I appreciate your ability to do it for me but I'd like to minimize my downtime. I heard that Tivo is built on some flavor of Unix or Linux - true? Although not current with linux I have system V kernel, FS, and disk structure programming experience. If I knew more about this I am sure I could get with one of my linux geek buddies and figure this out with a few pointers. Or is this madness and I should just shell out the $79 to have this done while I am on vacation....

                We could still do it.

If you want to try it yourself, see here:
