Probably the version of mfsadd you're using won't address hda, but also it sounds like you have errors on your TiVo boot drive.

is there any way to check the boot drive and is there a repair for this can i connect the drives an a different configuration ,like secondary ide master and slave

Yes, you can connect on the secondary ide and avoid hda.

You can also test your drive in a PC using the drive manufacturer's drive tools, typically available online.

well i'm back ,bought a new 320gb hd maxtor and went to upgrade .hooked orginal hd to secondary master and new hd to primary slave ,typed in mfsadd -r 4 -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb ,in got message 40 hrs nothing to add and when i page up the pc does reconize the to hd as a 40 gb and 320 gb .i've tried different commands such as hda and hdd ,hdc,hdb .some ways it says cannot open mfs command. any thoughts HELP!!
