  • HR10-250 stutter/reboot

First hello all! I'm so glad to have found your website! Here's some backstory as maybe you all can suggest something else too me...

I purchased an "Original Tivo" a LONG time ago (the original Phillips box, has lifetime service). I've since loaned it to my brother.

Back on Jan 1 05 I purchased a HR10-250 High Def Tivo Direct TV box from Circuit City with a protection plan. It's worked pretty well up to a couple days ago.

While watching recordings it started stuttering, when you press a button on the remote the box won't respond, then it reboots. The menu's have also been slow lately.

After searching the internet I'm convinced the HD is going bad. I called the Protection Plan number, only to be informed that they will not repair or replace the unit, they will only send me a check for $300 and told me good luck. I'm po'd cause that thing cost me $1,000 when I got it.

Long story short, I'm a "computer guy" (Systems Admin) and I'm all set to replace the hard drive (thanks to your great website), but I'm starting to wonder if I should even be bothering with it.

I quick search of the net showed that DirecTV and Tivo might be getting back together, there's a rumor that Q1 2008 that the HR10-250 units are going to get a software upgrade that will enable some "new" features that we didn't previously get to enjoy (web recording scheduling and some others).

So should I be bothering with fixing my HR10-250 and keeping DirecTV, or should I be looking at getting a newer Tivo and getting digital cable service? With that comes the question, I purchased my lifetime Tivo sometime around 1999 or early 2000, is there still some way that Tivo will swap that service over to a new box? I've been a "lifelong" tivo customer since they were first released, you'd hope they have some type of "loyalty"....

    Thanks in advance!

First off, we totally think that keeping the HR10-250 going is a good move. You should take a look at our replace kits for HR10-250s.

Next, the world of digital cable with TiVo these days is really excellent. TiVo makes two HD boxes for digital cable that use CableCARDs, and these are clearly the best units that TiVo has ever made. They do networking, online scheduling, TiVoToGo, multi-room viewing, TiVoCast, and a ton more. See the HD TiVos for cable area for more info.

Thanks for the quick response and the links.

I think I'll replace the HD in the HR10-250 for now, and go into "wait and see" mode with the DirecTV update that's supposed to be "on the way"...

That's pretty much the best plan.
