  • new case fan doesn't run (series 2)

i bought a new case fan for my series 2 b/c the old one was very noisy... so, i swapped it in, and now, it doesn't spin. tried the old one, now that one doesn't work either. i'm afraid i've ruined the connection to the board or something... shouldn't the fan always spin?

internal temp is 51/52C - and tivo says that's "normal"

It should always spin when powered up. If neither one works now, that sounds like motherboard trouble. Does the unit still boot?

yes, the unit boots no problem. other than the fan, everything works fine, and it is running at about 53 degrees C., a little hotter than usual i think, but still "normal".

i looked carefully at the pin connector on the motherboard where the fan goes, and it seems in tact. i had to pull a bit to get the OEM fan's connector loose, so i wanted to make sure i didn't separate that setting from the board. sure enough, it seems OK. i noticed that the new fan doesn't seem to connect snugly though... and the old noisy fan doesn't seem as tight either, now. but it looks like the same type of connector and everything.

any ideas on what to try next?

You could get a "pass-through" fan that uses power from the hard drive. See our SVR-3000 fan here:

hmm... i got the fan just above it. (i have a TCD240080)... looks like maybe i just need that cable?

also - do you have a link to fan replacement instructions for the SVR-3000? didn't see that on the kit instructions page; maybe i missed it.

this is a bummer... hope this idea works!

The fan replacement instructions for the SVR3000 are printed where you add the fan to the cart, see:

i'm not sure what you mean by this... when i add that fan to my cart, i just get a message saying 'You have added "Replacement fan for Sony SVR-3000 TiVo" to your shopping cart.' ... I'm trying to figure out whether I need the whole kit, or just the cable, and also just trying to get a sense whether it'll work with my model...

Right - especially for this situation, but it should be pretty obvious. If I'm wrong, though, just post and we'll be happy to help.
