    why get a 2nd HDD for incremental space when that would only increase the odds of drive failure thereby resulting in ALL data being lost?

    Instead perhaps replace the orignal drive with a much larger one, then back it up onto the second drive, then disconnect and save it for later back-up needs.

    Is my logic incorrect regarding this idea? Please help me understand if i'm incorrect in my assumption.

    That is certainly reasonable, but (a) some units have limits on the drive sizes they can handle reliably, and (b) some people want more than one drive to get a LOT of space (eg. two 750gb drives).
