  • Power-ups

I've been with Directv for 5-6 years, always with a TiVo DVR. I've had my current two TiVo's (one Samsung, one R10) for about 3 years and suddenly, almost daily, while playing back a show, my TiVo will suddenly go into Powering Up mode. There has been no power outage, just suddenly powers up, and usually within the first few minutes of turning on the unit and viewing a show. Once it completes the power-up sequence, no problem. The recorded show has reset to the beginning of the program, not a big deal. This has happened--and is happening daily now--on the Samsung primarily, but the R10 has also done it 3 times in the last month. It's annoying, but my biggest concern is if this ever happens while it's recording I will lose 10 minutes of the show while it reboots (or longer perhaps).

Have you heard of this problem from other users? Does it mean my hard drives are wearing out, as DTV says and I simply must replace the DVRs? (They sent me a free R15 but I am returning it never opened.)

    Thanks, Michelle

This does likely mean your hard drives are failing. You should order replace kit from here:

    R10

    Samsung

As far as both happening at the same time and the lack of power outages, I'd guess that you've had mild brownouts which have caused the drives to spin down a bit, then the power comes back on in full, and the heads try to write and read before the platters are fully spinning, and this can cause damage.
    Been here a long time . . .

      Thanks

Thanks for the info, Michael! I am trying to hold on to these two TiVos and refusing to accept DTV's free R15s.

About your Replace Kits: Does it matter that my Samsung is a model SIR S4080R instead of a 4040?

It is also a relief to know that WeaKnees sells DTV TiVos still and I can buy new ones if I decide not to hassle with these anymore.

        No, it does not matter.

These are not bad hard drives as many have discussed before. DirecTv release hardware update 6.3e several weeks ago and many have had this problem. What do you think the chances of both of your hard drives going at once are outside of a massive power surge? Pretty small I would think.
