  • TiVo Series2 functionality without subscription

    Hello

I'm nearing the plunge to TiVo HD, but along with that I need to decide what to do with the Series2 unit I have. I think the model number was TCD24008A, anyway it's a TiVo branded unit originally with 80 hours capacity upgraded to 240 hours capacity with a second WeaKnees hard drive. What are my options regarding the shows stored on the current Series2? I know I can't transfer to the HD units. I have The TiVo desktop/server is working over my home network, so I can transfer shows to my PC, but there are two problems with that. Watching TV shows on the PC without the remote control isn't very satisfactory. The real kicker though is storage capacity - that 240 hour capacity is 240 GB of data. I don't have 240 GB of free space on my computer, plus you're looking at 1/2 hour of transfer time per hour of show time. In other words 120 hours just to transfer all the data over the USB to ethernet connection. Is there a way to maintain Series2 functionality to play the shows stored on it if I discontinue service for that unit? Then I could leave the Series2 TiVo hooked up until my wife watches what's stored on it.

    Thanks in advance,

    Wintek

Unfortunately, there's really no way to keep using the unit, even for just the stored content, once service lapses.

Do you have lifetime or monthly on this? If it's lifetime, see our blog for more info. If it's monthly, the second unit on the account is currently only $6.95/month, so it's not too painful.

      Monthly payments

      Hello

I'm paying monthly for the Series2 unit. Just assumed I'd have to pay double for two units, thanks for the report on second unit prices. Doesn't really seem fair that I paid for the box that when purchased advertised manual recording capability without service when I bought it, but now that box I paid for has zero capability without service. Such is life.

      Thanks again,

      Wintek

I don't remember seeing that in the ads. They said Series2 units could do manual recordings w/o service? I remember seeing that for Series1 units, but I thought they specifically pulled that for Series2.

You can continue to use your Series2 to play back existing recordings, even after the service lapses. You can't do manual recordings without a subscription. The only units that were ever advertised to do that were the models that came with TiVoBasic (DVD units from Toshiba and Pioneer).

Can you send video to a Series2 without service via TiVoToGo?
