  • Tivo Remotre Problems

So my TiVo and the remote worked fine yesterday morning and when I returned home from work something had happened. No one else had used the TV during the day. Now when I press a button on the remote it takes a long time for it to work or a I have to hit the button multiple times. When I try to go into the guide or to watch a show I have recorded it is impossible because I hit the up or down arrows and it shoots up and down the list of shows. It will not stop on the one you want. When I press a button the red light on the remote lights up and the green light is lit on the Tivo. Sometimes when a press a button like Guide a yellow light turns on and others it doesn't and sometimes I get a yellow light and the guide will actually popped up. I tried new batteries in the remote--any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

That sounds like IR interference. See this post:

A slightly different problem with my remote

I have a refurbished Phillips Directv DVR (purchased from Weakness last Spring). Everything has been fine until the other day. A Directv problem: I could get the guide, but no picture. Screen was black, not matter what channel I switched to. Menu button on my peanut worked fine. To get a picture, I tried rebooting, and probably reset some values on my Sony TV remote, trying to resolve the problem.

Now I get picture, and can get a display for any channel. Tivo menu, To Do List, etc., is all available. I can also program two weeks ahead, by time, by channel or manually. However, the menu (guide) button no longer invokes the DirectV guide. I can get the guide by pressing the button on the front of the receiver. And when I press the menu button on the peanut, the green light turns amber, so it's getting a signal. Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Have you tried just rebooting the unit?

          Hi Michael.
Yes, I rebooted twice. Went through setup again, too. Also, thought it might be a temporary problem with the guide not being completely loaded. Usually, though, you get some kind of message or indication that it will take a while for the guide to load. And it's been over 24 hours, so I don't think that can be the issue. How can I isolate this? Could it be just one button on the remote? Or some setting on the satellite? As i said, I can get the menu from the button on the front of the unit, and all the other buttons (I think--I haven't tested them all, but have used the Tivo, Display, Volume, channels, etc.) seem to work.

Just to be clear--everything now works except that when you press the guide button on your remote, nothing happens? But when you press the button on the front of your unit, it works fine?

When you press the guide button on your remote, do you see any lights flash on the unit itself?

              Jeff,

Yes. All the other buttons on the remote work. It is only the menu (guide) button that doesn't. When I press the menu button on the remote, the green light on the front of the unit seems to turn partly amber (left side still green, but right side shows amber). Does that answer your question?

Oops. Sorry. I forgot to restate that if I press the Guide button on the front of the unit the Guide comes up on the screen.

I would say you need a new remote or a new faceplate/IR board, but I couldn't know without getting the unit here.

So, I should send both the unit and the remote? I'd have to decide how long a withdrawal I can stand.

We generally don't need the remote, but in this situation, it wouldn't hurt. We definitely need the unit to figure out what's up.

OK. I bought this from Weaknees as a new refurbished last April. Is any of it still under warranty?

One option: I could buy a new remote, and if that doesn't fix it, then send in the unit.

What's the turnaround time? Any ideas? Just need to decide based on how long I'd be without my Tivo. I can still get to the guide by pushing the button on the front of the unit, though it's not very convenient.

This might be better dealt with by email, rather than in a public forum, but yes, you could certainly try a remote first.

We typically get repairs and upgrades done in 1-2 business days.

                            Remote problems

Well, much belated report. I ordered a new remote from Weaknees, and that fixed the problem!
