  • Series 3 on the way - going from D* to Comcast - What should I expect on install day?

I'm switching from directv to cable (comcast) this weekend.

I ordered my upgraded Series3 tivo today and it shipped today.

Saturday is my Comcast install day and I told them I need 2 cablecards.

What should I expect on install day? Is there anything I should make sure I have?

What are the steps the installer ususally does?

I'm happy to be using a "regular" TiVo again instead of the DirecTV hr-10 250 that didn't network with my other tivos in the house (and didn't have all the cool features of the regular tivos)

For best results, you should totally set up your TiVo without the CableCARDs before the installer arrives. Then just let the installer install the cards - they shouldn't need to change anything else.
    Been here a long time . . .

How can I setup my TiVo without the Cablecards?

I don't have cable installed yet (I'm' still with my old DirecTV provider).

You can use antenna if you have one - even rabbit ears should get something, and they'll maybe even get HD digital broadcasts.

          Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks!

And then after the installer arrives and plugs in the cablecards, I would just need to rerun the initial setup to pick up the cable channels and schedule?

Actually, the TiVo senses the installation of the CableCARDs and prompts you to set them up then and there. Then once they're activated, they should automatically add the new channels to your lineup.

              Sweeet...thanks for the info!

Now if I can only convince tivo to give me that "transfer lifetime" offer on this new series3, I'll be golden

They seem to only be doing that to the TiVo HD at this point, but definitely post back with your results. More info here:

Yeah, I just got off the phone with them. I should have read the promotion email a bit closer. I thought it was for the series3, not just the regular TiVo HD.

Oh well, $6.95 a month isn't too bad.

I was going back and forth on whether to buy the series3 or the regular TiVo HD too. The TiVo HD would have been cheaper, but for some dumb reason I picked the series3.

If I would have bought the TiVo HD instead, I would have saved money AND been able to transfer my lifetime.

Well, at least you get the $200 rebate on the TiVo Series3, so hopefully it's not as painful.

I almost forgot about the $200 rebate. The form's right here on my desk. Thanks

I purchased a Series 3 HD in March 2007 and am just getting ready to get it set up. (I know, I'm slow).

I called Time Warner in Rochester, NY who is my cable provider.

They are going to come out on Tuesday and install 1 M Card (Blue Cable Card).

They claim that I will not be able to use the Dual Turner capability to record two shows at once. He said that Tivo needs to upgrade their firmware to support it and they haven't yet.

                        Can someone please confirm this??

                        Thanks,
                        Alan Sawyer

That's right. The TiVo Series3 can't record two shows at once from one M card. So just ask them to bring two M cards. Then you'll be all set.

Why these cable guys can't figure out the simple stuff is beyond me.
