Off-loading Series 1 shows, bypassing VCR

I have an old Series 1 SONY/TiVo with some saved programs I need to preserve when I upgrade to TiVo HD.

I know I can dump to VCR, then burn a DVD. But is there any way to off-load Series 1 disk content direct to any editable medium -- computer hard drive, DVD, etc.? I want to edit many hours of news clips down to a "highlights reel." And does anyone sell such a service?

That unit can only output in analog signal format, so your only option is to go through some intermediate digitizing device, like maybe a camcorder that has analog inputs. Then you could go FireWire out to a computer.
