  • OTA and Series 3

I'm an antenna guy only with no cable in Denver. Up to now I have been using two Series 2 single tuner boxes with great success. One of my boxes has failed (I suspect the hard drive). So here's my question. Should I replace the hard drive with one of your kits, or upgrade to the new series 3 dual tuner HD. I have both a UHF antenna for HD and VHF antenna for analog with awesome signals throughout my house. The cost difference is minor. My dilemma is that a Tivo support person told me that even though the Series 3 box will work OTA, the program guide will not work and I would lose all the features of programming and have to program by time and date. This guy said TIVO gets their info from Tribune Media and the OTA stuff is going away and not being supported. Yet both their website and your website talks about OTA support. So does it or doesn't it?
    Thanks

I haven't heard anything about losing support for OTA scheduling or programming on any TiVo product, but I certainly don't speak for TiVo. Suffice it to say we would be EXTREMELY surprised if that information turned out to be true.

As for what to do about your situation, I love the idea of keeping units up and running rather than dumping them in a landfill. Ideally you'd both fix that unit and use it in a lower priority location (or give it away) and also go for the TiVo HD. The new model is really sharp, and HD over the air looks great!
That's all there is to it!

Thanks for the reply. I'm OK with rebuilding the old and buying the new. Have you personally set up a Series 3 with OTA? Does the setup menu list OTA asking for your zip code, etc? And another question. When the Feds do away with the NTSC band will my series 2's still work without a cable box? Do they have an ATSC tuner?
      Thanks

Good questions. Yes, I've set up a Series 3 and yes, it asks for your zip code so it can cater the guide to a user's area. The Series 2 will continue to work with cable boxes after the broadcast changeover, although it's really up to the cable providers what type of signal they put out to their customers. And no, the Series 2 does not have an ATSC or any other type of integrated digital tuner.
