    Problems setting up Mini with Bolt

    I have a new Tivo Bolt connected through Verizon Fios using a cable card and a Gateway router. Works great. I'm trying to add a new Mini in another room. The new Mini is plugged into coax coming through the wall. I've connected the Bolt to the Gateway router with an ethernet connection and redid the setup on the Bolt as "ethernet". I'm told that the Moca capabilities are all included in the Bolt and Gateway router. When I go through the Mini setup, the Tivo screens show up and the set up process is normal. However, ultimately no live TV loads. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

    Ultimately, is it just too complicated to try to use a Mini without an Ethernet connection? Should I just get a second Bolt box?

    In order for this setup to work, you have to set up the Bolt as a MoCA Bridge. You also should be using a PoE filter. See:

        This is not correct. The FiOS gateway has a built-in MoCA bridge; configuring the BOLT as a MoCA bridge with the FiOS gateway already bridging between the MoCA/coax and Ethernet segments would create a dual bridge and likely lock-up the network.

        So, the BOLT can be connected as either an Ethernet or MoCA client, one or the other, whichever is most convenient.
        Sidebar: An Ethernet connection for the BOLT would be preferable for maximum throughput to/from the BOLT if offloading shows is important; however, a MoCA client connection for the BOLT would allow the Mini and BOLT to continue communicating with each other -- i.e. streaming live or recorded content from the BOLT to the Mini -- even during a router reboot/outage, since MoCA is a peer-to-peer technology and so their communication would bypass the gateway.

        Note that a MoCA connection from the BOLT to a FiOS Quantum Gateway should still reach around 400 Mbps (standard MoCA 2.0), as compared to a Gigabit Ethernet connection's rate of 1000 Mbps. The Mini's max communication rate will be around 170 Mbps, the max for MoCA 1.1.

        Agreed. Though FiOS setups don't require a "PoE" MoCA filter to secure the MoCA network (since the MoCA signals couldn't traverse from the coax plant through the ONT), a "PoE" MoCA filter, properly installed, provides a performance boost to the MoCA signals, efficiently reflecting the signals back onto the coax plant.

          Good news. I'm up and running. I rebooted the host Tivo a couple times. Rebooted the Mini a couple times as well. I changed one thing on the Mini...MoCa channel to "auto" instead of 15. Not sure if this did it or if it just finally kicked in, but either way. IT WORKS!
