  • Help required / Tivo Mini buffering / Netflix buffering on Roamio

When I am watching either a broadcast channel or Netflix, the mini will out of the blue, go into a buffering mode for 20-30 secs and then continue with normal video.

I have a suspicion the reason is due to the fact I have a Powerline Adapter providing the Ethernet connection. My problem: This my only choice as I have no coax cable in the vicinity of the mini (for a Moca connection) and it is unpractical to run a level5 or 6 cat Ethernet cable from the router/modem.

Do you think I am on the right track with my analysis? Can you suggest some way in which to improve the signal to the mini to prevent the buffering?

On my other issue: Netflix would appear to buffer every night while watching my main HDTV on the Roamio. I have tried changing the Netflix setup at a slower rate, re-set the Powerline Adapter and checked the speed of my Comcast Internet (runs on average about 29mbps).

I have also read on the web that Netflix has had problems for the past six months.

Can you set me straight on the Netflix issue?

Netflix has definitely had some problems, but since you say you are having issues with broadcast channels also, I do think you are right in suspecting that the Powerlines are causing the problems.

First, what speed are the Powerlines?

Next, have you put a laptop computer on them when you have the issues and run a speed test?

Finally, while we generally don't recommend it, in some cases, a Wireless N bridge can be more reliable and faster than the alternatives. Certainly ethernet and coax/MoCA are the best options, but Wifi could be better than Powerline in your situation.

      Michael,

The speed of the Trendnet Powerline is 500mbps (At least that's what it states on the specs). I do not have a laptop pc, so testing them is not a practical situation.

The other issue is I cannot use coax/moca on the mini because I do not have coax available in the room it is situated in. Also, wireless will not work with a mini according to Tivo. So, I am back to the powerline idea at least on the mini.

What is your opinion about using wireless between the router/modem and the Roamio Tivo unit and if so how do I go about doing this? Are there faster powerline units out there that could improve the signal to the mini?

Your help on this frustrating issue is appreciated.

So both the Mini and the Roamio are on Powerlines?

          Michael,

Yes, the Mini and the Roamio are both on Powerlines (Trendnet 500AV adapters with built in outlets / TPL-407E2K). I have just discovered that Trendnet does have a Powerline Adapter that runs @ 1200. Would this help with the problem?

I don't think a faster Powerline setup will help. Even 100 Mbps should be plenty. My guess, though, is that your power lines aren't supporting the Powerline adapters at full speed. That's how it goes in many houses. That's why putting a computer on there somewhere and running a speed test might tell you something.

But try putting the Roamio on Wifi. See if Netflix on the Roamio is any better.

              Michael,

Thanks for the suggestion about trying WiFi on the Roamio. I will try that.

How do I go about improving the signal to the Mini. Like I said, I do not have coax in the location of the mini and according to Tivo, the mini will not work on WiFi.

Well, TiVo says no Wifi for the Mini, but if it's faster than your Powerlines, it's clearly a better option.

Other than that, I don't have any solution for you if running coax or ethernet is impossible.
