Phone line needed for DirecTV TiVo?

    I have had my phone lines unplugged from my Tivo series1 & series2 for 674 days now, initially as a test to see what would happen. My guide and programming seemed to not be affected, but recently I have been having automatic rebooting issues multiple times every day for the past week. Is this possibly due to the unplugged phone lines? I've heard that software upgrades are initiated through the phone line input and maybe this issue is a result of not getting these upgrades. ?

        Thanks Jeff! This sure smells of a conspiracy by Dtv/Tivo to get all the old machines out of consumer circulation by causing this huge inconvenience, thereby forcing people to go out and purchase new HD dvr's. All this for the sole purpose of increasing revenues and just in time for the holidays. (?)

          Yeah - we really have no evidence of a conspiracy, but you're certainly not the first to suggest it.
