  • Can I use broadband for my initial TiVo setup?

In most cases, yes, you can use broadband for initial guided setup. Any TiVo that can use broadband can use it for guided setup. You just need the right version of the TiVo OS - only newer versions can do this easily. We send out 7.3.1 or later for all Series2 units to make sure all of our customers can use their existing ethernet or wireless connections when installing our replacement drives.

Series3 units can all do broadband guided setup.

Units that don't show options for broadband may be able to use broadband for guided setup. You'd need a compatible USB-Ethernet adapter, and a router running DHCP (most do by default). Then, you enter a "dialing prefix" of ,#401 in your setup area. This is entered by going in to the dialing prefix area and entering comma-pound-4-0-1. Give it a try!

FYI - my post above applies to standalone (non-DirecTV) units only. DirecTV TiVos do need to dial in to work initially.

      Networking

I have a DirecTivo R10. I think I know the answer already, but I thought I'd give the "Pros From Dover" a shot at it.. namely, is there any way a NON-Linux user, like myself, can network an R10 unit? I've heard a few different answers and am looking for the latest and greatest info.

P.S. Just boosted the R10 with dual 300 GIG drives. W00t!

We really don't recommend any of the "hacks" that can make DirecTV TiVos network - for several reasons.

In any event, you'd need a very thorough knowledge of Linux, both for installation and for pretty regular maintenance.

But also, as far as we know, the R10 was built by DirecTV to keep hackers out, and there are still no ways (stable or not) to do it with that unit.

          give me some reasons!

What are some of the reasons you don't recommend any of the DTV TiVo hacks besides being unstable? I would love it if you could elaborate on that.....

            #1 reason is: Instability!

The Linux hacks really do create tons of problems for TiVos. We hear from people who tried these everyday - and the ones unfortunate enough to have bought hacked units on eBay. The units fail, and the people don't have an image to restore.

Our feeling is that our customers want rock-solid units that work in their living rooms - not hacked boxes that require maintenance. Our customers want to watch a show when they want to watch a show. They don't want to have to try to restore some Linux backup and lose their recordings.

We are thinking of going with DirecTivo HD, but we're "cell and broadband only" (no landline phone). Does the above statement that "DirecTV TiVos do need to dial in to work initially" apply to DirecTivo HD units also?

If it does, can you recommend whether a service like Vonage (like this) would likely work for initial and on-going connectivity needs?

No, that adapter only works with units that have active USB ports, and all DirecTV units have inactive USB ports.

Yes, the DirecTV HD TiVo needs to dial in intially to work.

And, yes, we have a way to make this work with Vonage. You just get our TiVo external modem kit with works with Vonage, and you're all set.

                    I have a Hughes HDVR2.

Am I able to make the USB ports active so I can eliminate the phone line?

All I want to do is to be able to update the unit via the internet instead of the phone. Nothing more or less than that.

                    Possible?
