In most cases, yes, you can use broadband for initial guided setup. Any TiVo that can use broadband can use it for guided setup. You just need the right version of the TiVo OS - only newer versions can do this easily. We send out 7.3.1 or later for all Series2 units to make sure all of our customers can use their existing ethernet or wireless connections when installing our replacement drives.
Series3 units can all do broadband guided setup.
Units that don't show options for broadband may be able to use broadband for guided setup. You'd need a compatible USB-Ethernet adapter, and a router running DHCP (most do by default). Then, you enter a "dialing prefix" of ,#401 in your setup area. This is entered by going in to the dialing prefix area and entering comma-pound-4-0-1. Give it a try!
