  • Trying to set up a TiVo in Germany...

I had my TiVo working in the States via the same set-up except that I had a cable modem. Now I'm in Germany and I'm trying to do the initial set-up and I keep getting stuck on the network page. Without getting past this page, I can't even watch live TV through the TiVo and have to completely disconnect everything.

    Here's what I've got:
Linksys Wireless-G Broad Band Router WKPC54G T-Mobile Speedport 201 modem TiVo Brand AG0100 TiVo Series 2 DT PC connects to router through network cable (username/password) 2x Laptops connect wirelessly (username/password) iPhone connects wireless (username/password ONLY for network)

Windows XP (SP3) on PC and both laptops

ISP (TKS-net, German version of T-mobile "Deutche Telekom") Broadband DSL server requires username and password ISP does not require a DHCP Server ID

    No firewall on Linksys
WEP enabled (but looks like a good connection) and I've tried entering the key in both formats (toggle via "info" button) doesn't seem to matter.
Signal strength 84-100% but most recently, I've got it sitting right next to the router for a 100% signal strength on all tries.

Even when I plug a network cable from the TiVo directly to the Linksys, I get an N13 error. Plugging directly into the modem results in an unresolvable error.

Based on what I've been reading in these and other forums, I finally figured out that I needed to set my Linksys router to PPPoE and to give it my TKS username and password. On the Linksys status page, it says 'connected' but my laptops still require that I connect via the TKS connection with username and password and not just connect to my home network. When I try to setup the TiVo, I get to the "Does your DHCP erver require a DHCP Server ID?" I answer No and eventually get an error N13.

Obvioulsy when I select "disabled" for the Linksys option regarding Local DHCP Server, I get an N02 (No DHCP Server) error.

Firewall ports opened on Desktop and on ISP connection on computer and the ISP says that they don't have any of the ports in the firewall closed.

I thought I needed to convert the Speedport 201 to a bridge to make the PPPoE connection on the router work, but according to the ISP, who supplied the Speedport 201, it is just a simple modem and doesn't need to be converted to a bridge.

I thought I had tried everything but I am still stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have contacted the TiVo help chat and my ISP help line multiple times but neither can help me resolve. My Linksys is so hold, they don't even support it anymore!

    Where am I going wrong?

I really think that the TiVo just can't support that PPPoE connection. I'm pretty sure it can't.

You need a true DHCP server with a full router. The client shouldn't have to do anything to get logged in. Try using an iPod or something over WiFi with DHCP - if that can connect, the TiVo should be able to.

I have an iPhone that is able to connect via WiFi over that same network. Its a little slow but it works.

My Linksys router says that it is connected to the network but nothing seems to be able to go just through the router. I'm wondering if I just need a new router.

Other folks around her using the same system are able to connect through PPPoE. But I can't figure out what they are doing differently from me.

I saw in another post that you (I think) suggested that an N13 error could be a hard drive failure in the TiVo. Is that correct?

      Thanks for your help.

Yup - an N13 error can definitely be hard drive failure.

Just curious: what can you do with a US TiVo in Germany?

Turns out it wasn't anything quite so serious. My router was just bad. So I replaced that and everything went fine from there. Unfortunately, one of my indicators for the router was completely wrong. I thought I was getting on-line with my iPhone through my router but that turned out not to be the case. What I thought was a reaaaaallllly slow connection turned out to be a complete lack of connection, it just never timed out or gave me any indication. So I replaced the router and now both the iPhone and the TiVo are up and running.

TiVo actually supports the American Freedom Network (AFN) which is the cable/satellite service provided to US servicemembers stationed overseas. We use Zip code 00020 and that provides us access to the satellite programming. Works pretty well. Not quite as good a selection as back in the states but certainly better than nothing. Unfortunately, most of the other cool things (YouTube, Amazon, etc.) don't work over here because of the German IP.

          Thanks for your help
