  • No phone connection

    Hello,

I have a Series 2 Tivo DVR that I purchased almost 3 years ago. I feel like I've tried everything under the sun, & read all of the posts I could find, but I'm still stuck! My old roommate had set up my Tivo in the living room to download over the internet, which I find out AFTER she moves! When she left, the internet was cancelled, so I'm now stuck with uploading through the phone. This had worked the first year before she moved in.

Anyway, I know the land line works as I pulled in another line & phone to hear the tone. I've tried switching the numbers to call, but had no luck. I shut off the Tivo for 30 minutes, & then restarted the system last night. I've tried the #096 prefix I saw in another post, but nothing happened. I go to test the phone connection, & after preparing, it dials for ~20 seconds, & says 'no connection'.

I've seen in other posts that the modem may be bad. Could this be the case? I know switching to internet would be best, but I'd really like to get this phone thing fixed before I spend more money every month for internet, even though I know an external modem costs money as well. I could get a wireless adapter to 'borrow' the internet from a neighbor, but all of the networks close to me are secured.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

#096 is not the right prefix. It should be ,#096

I'd recommend you try removing all of the fancy settings and just go to the basics: No call waiting prefix, nothing. Turn dial tone and phone detection off. Then see what happens.

Thanks for your message, WK-Jeff. I do remember putting the comma in front, but it still didn't work. I even tried it with both of the local phone numbers, but nothing happened. Everything's off - detection, call waiting, etc - on that screen. It just has the phone number & tone dialing selected.
I'm pretty sure it's not VOIP either. I have COX Communications in the Washington, DC area, & I think it's the plain old phone connection.
If it is a blown modem, what does that mean exactly? I see that I can buy some on this site, but I'm not that techno-advanced to understand how it works or does without the internet?!?
Thanks a lot for your help!

If you are using Cox for phone service, it is not POTS, most likely. It is phone service through their cable line. That could be the problem.
