  • External modem problems

Hey there-- I'm having some problems setting up an external modem I recently bought from weakness for my parents Series 2 Tivo... I'm hoping folks on the forum can help me out if I've missed something.

The Tivo is a Humax DRT400 with lifetime service. Modem went out (couldn't hear it dialing), so picked up the modem and cable to try to save it. Last successful connection was several months ago.

I have the modem set up:
    - DB9 on modem to serial minijack on Tivo
    - phone line to left jack on modem
    - dial prefix is set as ,#319
    - availability & dial tone detection off

When I try to test the connection, I can hear the modem kick on and can hear the modem dial, then start with the squelches. If I listen in on another line, I hear the data sounds (with a lot of static). Testing Connection stays at Preparing -> "Dialing...", and eventually fails with "Service not answering". If I pick up the line then, I can hear the modem making one long constant tone... it'll do this until I power it off-- have left it for 15 minutes or so and still stays on the line making that tone. The "OH" light comes on when it tries to dial, and just stays on solid red. No other lights flash at all.

I've tried swapping the phone cable, using a different jack, removing other phones/stuff that use the phone lines... no difference.

Not sure what to try next.

Any help would be appreciated-- right now the Tivo's main use is as a clock, and even that's about 35 minutes off as it hasn't dialed in for so long and there's no way to manually set it.

    Thanks,

Try changing the prefix to the following:

    ,#396,,XXXXXXX

Replace the Xs with the number that you want the TiVo to dial, as you would dial it on the phone.

OK... so if set up like that, I assume I'd leave the number in there on the other screen, presumably meaning that the Tivo would dial it (again) after entering this prefix-- presumably, making the tones after it connects?

Or does the changed prefix alter that? What does the #396 code do (as opposed to #319)? I'm guessing the "3" part is the code to get it to use the serial port... what are the other numbers doing? Just so I can know what affect changing those will have if this doesn't work and I need to debug it some more.

      Thanks,

It will dial twice, but no big deal.

The 396 slows the modem down.
