  • Series 2 "forgets" the network settings

I have a series 2 that has worked fine for four years. The hard drive started making a very loud sound (like a jet airplane warming up), so I power cycled it and it wouldn't restart. I got a new hard drive from WeaKnees and now I have a new set of problems.
    1) It took about 7-8 tries to get it to reboot successfully. Sometimes it would lock up on the gray "powering up" screen. I had to do the Guided Setup three times before I was able to complete the process without getting an unrecoverable error.

    2) It keeps "forgetting" or losing my network connection. I have a TiVo-branded USB-WiFi adapter. Even during the Guided Setup I had to keep re-entering my network name and passcode. Now that I have it running (well, more like limping) it stops recognizing the network adapter (N01 error). I have a second TiVo and adapter and have swapped adapters and the problem stays with the TiVo and not the adapter.

    3) When I got the new hard drive I compared it to my original and I noticed the jumper settings are different. My original HD was jumpered across pins 1 & 2, the new one is jumpered across pins 9 & 10. I don't know if this is an error or related to the larger size of the new hard drive.

I haven't put the old hard drive back in to see if the network problem goes away, but does anyone have any suggestions for fixing or troubleshooting this?

    Thanks!

The jumper is not the problem. I think problem lies elsewhere--either with the power supply or possibly the motherboard of the TiVo. The symptoms (N01, losing network settings, etc.) are not really drive issues, I'm sorry to say. I realize it isn't a long-terms solution, but does the unit work if you use the phone? What about a wired network connection?

      Thanks Jeff.
I haven't tried the phone line yet, I don't have a cord handy that will reach. What do you mean by a wired network connection? The Series 2 has a pair of USB ports on the back, but doesn't have an ethernet port. If I could connect directly from the Series 2 to my router, that would be great!

I tried my original drive, but the TiVo just can't boot up. It gets stuck at the gray "Powering Up" screen.

So, if the problem is the power supply or logic board, is there a repair possible? If I replace the logic board, would I lose my lifetime service?

      Thanks!

Yes, we can repair a power supply or motherbaord issue. If we do the repair, then you won't lose your service. You cannot simply replace the entire board; you will lose your lifetime. The board has to be repaired.
