  • Adding old Series 2 master Tivo as second drive to DT

I have an old series 2 Tivo (140060); I recently replaced that master hard drive with a weaknees 300gb hard drive.

I just did the lifetime subscription upgrade to the the DT 80 hour device.

    I have 3 questions:

    1) It seems to me from reading the forums that I cannot take the old HD and outright replace the new drive with it, since they use different hardware, but would have to first upgrade the software on the drive, which is doable but a bit of a pain

    2) Alternatively, can I take the 300gb master hard drive and turn it into a second drive on the new unit. Note I don't care about preserving shows. If I did this, do I need additional hardward (brackets, cables, fans, etc?)

    3) If (2) doesn't work, can I mail the old 300gb back to weakness and have you reinstall the software for the DT80, for a reasonable fee?

    Thanks for your help,

An appreciate weaknees and Tivo customer.

1a) true. the dual tuner (as with most model tivos, for that matter) has software specific to its model

2a) yes, you can format the 300 to be a slave drive and yes, you will need a bracket to hold both drives. here are some links for that:

3a) yes. and here's a link for that service:

Thanks for the questions and thanks for supporting the forum!

      Jason -

Thanks for the quick reply. I am about to order the twinbreeze bracket set, one last quick question - do I have to do anything different when I restart the tivo to have it reformat the transferred drive, or will Tivo prompt me to reformat it when I start up?

Just to be clear, you would have to format the add drive on a Linux computer BEFORE you install it into the TiVo. The TiVo won't do any formatting on its own. That's what the top link above is for.

WeaKnees provides pre-formatted drive that you can just drop in, and we'll also format a drive that you send to us.
