  • Hughes HDVR2 Pixelation issues

I recently have an issue with my HDVR2 pixelating some channels on SAT 2 input. Audio is affected as well. I had an S-Video connection as well as a video output connection. While monitoring the video output I disconnected the S-Video and the problem goes away. Plug S-video back in and the problem returns immediately. I have the same issue if I connected to both video outputs (no S-VIDEO) as well. I though it might be a thermal problem since the unit was running at 50C and would go up to 51C with the S-Video connection. However cooling the unit did not help.

The unit was updated with a larger drive sometime ago with no issues. The only recent change was placing the unit into a new audio cabinet thus the thought of a cooling issue. Any ideas?

This is a weird problem. Are you possibly making this up??

Well anyway, if not, I suppose it's possible that you have some sort of interference issue. The TiVo hard drive doesn't really have to work harder to output simultaneously through those various outputs, so I don't think heat or drive duty is a factor.

Are you sending the S-Video to a VCR?
That's all there is to it!

The S-video is going through my Onkyo receiver.
I admit this is a weird issue but I am not the only one with it. I got the fix from the tivo community site. Seems to be an issue with DVR2's.

The fix works for most people, myself included, with the problem but no one knows why. I would like to get my S-Video back but may need to replace the unit to do so. Not likely a power supply issue?

This still seems to be an onging issue with recent posts July 2007.

I got tired of reading that super long thread...no one ever seemed to say WHY it was happening. Did you get that far?

No one has come up with a reason for it. For the majority only using one video output, typically composite video, will solve the issue. For some only temporarily. I have gone through all the threads and it is always the same.

darn, I was really hoping the WK guys would have figured this out and have a fix by now. My HDVR2 started displaying this problem a couple weeks ago. For a while, disconnecting the S-Video (and using both composite outputs) seems to fix it, now it's happening again. I guess I'll have to get a y-connector and try using only one composite out now.

Here's one for all of you. We too had pixilation and audio problems with our Series 2 units. The problem started about 3 years ago and we couldn't figure out the cause. We recently upgraded to the DirecTV HDDVR and I told the installers about the problem. We spent 2 hours trying to diagnose what was causing the problem. Everytime my wife or I turned on the microwave oven, all sets in the house (4 of them; two TIVOs, two regular decoders) would pixilate. The sets would show that the converters couldn't find Sat 2.

I wanted the installers to move the new dish to the opposite side of the house away from the kitchen because if I moved the oven to the other side of the house the pixilation would not occure. The installers were sure that the problem was the oven, that it was pushing out RF that was interupting the signal from the dish to the receivers. After our three week vacation, we purchased a new microwave oven manufactured by someone else.

Problem gone. Now when the oven is on (even on full power) no more pixilation.

                Something to think about!

Wow - I've seen it interfere with my WiFi (my AirTunes stops when it's on) but I haven't seen this. So much for shielded cable.

Issue solved. Finally sent one of my HDVR2's to CCS for service after it started failing like my first one. All a power supply issue on the main board. Filter caps for Tuner 1 and 2 power supply's needed to be replaced. CCS does great work and fast turn around.

Glad you finally got it up and running!

In the two years since you last read the thread, we've started doing satellite tuner upgrades (and a whole host of other motherboard repairs on almost all TiVo DVRs).

Here's info about our sat repairs:
