  • The dreaded "almost there" screen.......

Contacted TiVo, they directed me to go thru the power cycling which I have done several times, hoping upon hope. That's not the answer, so what are my options now?

    1) Go ahead and buy new hard drive, if I do this does my subscription roll over?

    2) Should I make sure it's not a power supply issue or has this pretty much been cleared up?

    3) My tivo is about to be 3 years old. Should I just go ahead and buy a new one? I guess a lot of this is dependent on whether the subscription rolls over or not?

    4) For anyone that has had this experience, what did you do?

As I recall, adding a HD doesn't do anything to a subscription. I'm not sure TiVo actually knows--I believe it's the TiVo per se that is registered.

What sort of subscription do you have, i.e., is yours a used TiVo with a new subscription, did you have a lifetime subscription, or what. More details.

I'm not the expert here. I'm just chiming in from memory after being away from TiVo for a few years.

We don't have a lifetime subscription. Paying month to month.

I bought the TiVo about 3 years ago, we have changed debit cards since then, but other than that nothing else has changed.

If your TiVo is going from "powering up" to "Almost there" and cycling back to the powering up screen, you most likely have a bad hard drive. I would recommend a replacement drive.

If you replace the drive in your TiVo, you will NOT lose (or otherwise change or affect) your TiVo subscription.

If you have monthly service through TiVo, then you might consider just getting a replacement unit. After the rebate, the box is quite reasonably priced. (I'm assuming your unit does not have a built-in DIRECTV receiver; the units for DIRECTV don't have rebates currently.)

          One more question.....

I have forgotten all the start up charges and the such. What were they?

Currently the only start-up charges are the $150 you pay pre-rebate. Once you've committed to a year of service, you can submit the rebate form and wait for your check.

Currently, paying for three years in advance works out to your best deal, amortizing to a little over $8/month.
That's all there is to it!

Hmmm. If he has month to month payment and no contract, and he changes his HD, can he continue with mtm without making the 3-year commitment?

Further, if he buys a new TiVo, can he slip that in without having to buy a contract?

Oops. I guess I shouldn't have assumed this was a standalone model. Is it a Directv TiVo with an access card? If it is, then you'd want to use your old access card to avoid re-upping your commitment with Directv for another two years.

                So what's the model??

Hey Jason, I was assuming it was a standalone too.

But, with the new TiVo fee setup I wondered about the most cost-effective way to go. Well, because my own preferences (rules according to moorpheus) include not being tied to a contract.

I was really pondering the best way to go.
