  • Upgraded DVR40 with HD problem

I've got a DirecTV RCA DVR40 in which I added about a year or 2 ago a Weaknees 120 GB 2nd drive. We are now experiencing video freezes and occasional reboots. Since I'm not absolutely positive which drive may be failing and I'm a little unclear on Tivo's software architecture (hard drive-based or firmware), I've tried disabling either drive and setting the master/slave jumper appropriately and can't get beyond the 'Powering On' grey startup screen.

Sooooo...it appears Tivo's software lives on the original drive and I can get a replacement drive but will that effectively nuke my ability to use my Weaknees 120 GB? That's assuming the 40 GB original drive is the one failing (think it is) but I don't feel like pulling the drives and testing with a PC.

Any suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Right - replacing either drive would need another drive to be tested and reformatted to work with it. By far the easiest answer is to just get a new replace kit and not reuse either drive. The problem with trying to reuse a potentially bad drive is that after testing and the possibility that both drives are bad, you lose a bunch of time and some money.

Replace kits for that model are here:
