using a DSR708 as a stand alone DVR? or?

I was given a used DVR708. I do not have satalite service. Can this unit be used as a DVR (antenna/cable in)? Or is it a scrap unit for the h.d. only and unusuable with out satalite service.. Anyone wanna buy the h.d.?

answering my own question

Since there was such an out pouring of expertise, I was forced to answer my question with help from another TIVO forum

In case anyone else was wondering, the answer is nope, use it for direct tv or nothing. gut the unit, re-use the h.d. for other projects and throw the rest away...

Sorry that we didn't get you a faster answer, but if you owned the unit, then you should get decent money for it on eBay - more than the value of the drive.

Been here a long time . . .

I do own the unit, got it for free.
I looked on ebay, 1 of 5 had bids, the rest don't have any bids. These seem/appear to sell for $10 or less (plus the obligatory $18 s/h).
