  • Tivo and DVD Recorder

In a recent lightening strike I lost among other things a Humax DRT800. The main thing I liked about it was the ability to make DVDs.

Will a stand alone DVD recorder work with DirecTv HDVR2 Tivo via A/V turner?

Yes, you should be able to play programming from your A/V output and record it onto a DVD recorder. Some shows use copy protection like MacroVision, but for the most part it's a good solution. We carry a DVD recorder here:

But you should let us know what the symptoms are on the DRT800...maybe it can be repaired!
That's all there is to it!

The DRT800 is under extended warranty so getting it fixed is not an issue. The reason I asked about dvd recorder is that what I don't like about the DRT800 is having to pay both tivo and directv. Not cost effective. Had I been thinking, I would not have bought it in the first place. Its headed for ebay after it gets fixed.

I'm with you on having to pay both, but if you had a DTV TiVo you'd pay both a DVR service line item AND an access card fees. Everyone gets you coming and going, don't they? Actually, though, I really like that unit. Too bad there aren't any more TiVos in the works with the built-in DVD burner.

Apparently DRT800s are not worth much. So I was wondering if after it got back from repair, would the hard drive(s) work in a HDVR2? Having opened it up there appears to be a master/slave set up. One of the drives is under a metal cover but the other (slave?) is mounted simular to HDVR2. Its a Seagate 300 gig!

I guess they are going to replace the HDVR2 chassis. Have not heard back, and you're closed tomorrow.

There's only one drive in there - the other drive is likely the DVD burner. The hard drive would work with reformatting. Pricing is here:
