    CableCARD installation and troubleshooting help

    Some people have reported confusion when installing and activating CableCARDs on their new Series3 HD TiVo. In most circumstances an actual visit from the cable company is involved, but not always. Either way, below are some helpful links to get you started.

    In addition, I'd be curious to hear if anyone out there has been faced with any hurdles along the way and how you overcame them.

    TIPS...

    1 - Be sure to install a CableCARD in slot 1 before you install one in slot 2

    2 - You may need to call your cable provider and request a "cold hit" for your CableCARD. If you replace a drive on a previously activated unit, this should allow you to re-serialize the card to the TiVo

    3 - CableCARDS are one-way, downstream. If you want to order pay-per-view or video-on-demand, either order over the phone, online, or with another cable box in the house. Once the programming is unscrambled for your house, the TiVo will be able to see and record it.

      gives important information on dual tuner Cable Cards:

      "Currently, only the TiVo HD is compatible with this feature of an M card. A Series3 TiVo can use an M card, but only to record one channel at a time. So for a Series3 unit, you'd need two M cards installed to have the ability to record two channels at once. If/when the Series3 units can receive two streams through one M card, notice should be posted on the TiVo M card support page."

        I'm having some difficulty with my CableCard and TiVo HD (not the expensive Series 3). The cable company has come out 3 times.

        1. I have Brighthouse Cable - Scientific Atlanta Cards (MultiStream)
        2. All of my HD channels will work, but some basic stuff like Comedy Central, MTV, Oxygen, History Channel, WGN, ect. won't work. I can't get any of the on demand stuff, but after reading the above I know why. They have plugged up a digital box and can see all those chanels (I also get them in my bedroom on the basic analog cable).

        We've tried 3 different cable cards. Has anyone encountered this problem? Basically the cable company has told me that they don't know what to do. This is so frustrating.

          They should really, really just try new cards. That fixes this most of the time.
