My hard drive just went bad on my Toshiba. I occassionally unplug the unit at night because the hard drive is noisy. Does unplugging the unit and then replugging in the morning cause undue wear and tear on the drive? Is that why my drive failed after approx 3 years? Is it best to just keep it plugged in all the time?

Yes, the power-up/power-down cycle is pretty taxing for hard drives. That can definitely contribute to a shortened lifespan. A "replace" kit should do the trick:
