  • Help taking the plung

I currently have a modified XBOX with a 120 gig drive inside that I use to store and play old movies and TV series (Andy Griffith etc...). I record the shows via VCR then capture them into my PC (lots of work). I love the XBOX because I can add and remove files AVI (XVID) easily via FTP from my PC which allows me to review and assemble complete series before I take the time to burn them permanently to DVD.

I just took vacation to my Nephews house who had TIVO and I am hooked. I see a lot of potential in TIVO and want to take the plung...

I am looking for a solution which would offer me the same features he had with Tivo (auto recording shows, replay etc...) along with the capability to perform the current functionality of my XBOX. It would also be nice if the shows captured via this device could be easily uploaded to my PC and burned to DVD etc.... I may someday move to HDTV so I would like this purchase to be the first HDTV capable device.

Can someone reccomend devices and a place to start reading? I heard a Series 2 Tivo can be easily moded to perform all of these task except the HDTV??? What is a good basic easily modified Series 2 Tivo to buy with dual tuners and networking capabilities? I guess DVR would be a plus but not s show stopper...

That's right - basically, a Series2 TiVo can record shows and then the shows can be transferred to your PC or Mac. The Series2 units are here:

    and

Then, to burn to DVD, you need Sonic MyDVD software.
    Been here a long time . . .

      another way

I have 2 Sony Sat T-60s. The one I have in the living room, is hooked up to my Philips DVD recorder through one of the outputs on my T-60, and another output hooked up to my Sony Wega monitor. Works fine.
