I bought a HR10 on Ebay. Even though I do not yet have a HDTV I activated it on my DirectTV account. I got my bill today and I am being charged for HD service and a leasing fee. I called and was told that anytime a hd unit is activated that the 9.99 fee is included. I wanted to deactivate and they said that I cant do that with out returning my "Leased unit". I didn't get into the fact that I bought it on ebay.
My problem is that I bought a unit that they are saying is leased. any advice on how to best deal with Direct tv? I don't want to return a unit that I bought privately.

Often, if you call them and explain that you purchased it from a private party (nothing wrong with that) and that the previous customer owned it and did not lease it, they'll convert their notation to show it as an owned unit.

Also, we haven't seen it for a while, but we're pretty sure you can activate it without the HD package. Try telling them to cancel that.
