  • Sony SAT-60 odd problem...

Last night, my SAT-60 developed a very strange problem:

When going thru the menus- whether scrolling up or down- it will occasionally scroll past any choice I make without me pressing a button on the remote. For instance, if I'm in the channel guide and I want to move down 2 channels, it'll sometimes do just that, or keep going past it.

The same is true on recorded shows- I might be scrolling down to a recorded show, and it'll scroll past it. Scrolling up can have the same thing occur. Actually, this happens in all the menus.

I tried rebooting it- and sometimes both yellow lights flash simultaneously on the unit's front panel and the screen gets stuck on the "Welcome" screen. If I unplug it again, it usually recovers but still exhibits the above weirdness.

I did an upgrade several years ago, and everything's worked fine (except for slow responses when setting up fro a recording and sometimes some temporary stalls when scrolling thru long lists of recorded shows). So, I'm not afraid at all of going back under the hood.

My upgrade consisted of adding a second drive to give me (with the original drive) 160 hours of recording. My gut tells me that one of the drives is failing. I'd like to think that the original drive (35 hours or so) is failing and that I can swap it with the newer 120MB drive (I think that was the size) as a primary drive. (even though I'd lose some hours of recording time- no biggie though- I've yet to fill 160 hours!) Of course, if the newer drive has died- or is in the process of dying, I guess I'm in trouble.

I do know that if I swap the drives, I'm going to need a Linux based computer to set it up and to record/copy the TIVO files to- there was a link with these files somewhere, but I can't remember where?

Anyway, does it sound like I'm on the right track, or is this weird menu stuff nothing to do with a dying drive?

Because it will probably be asked, here's some more info:

    - My hard drives aren't making any odd noises
    - My phone link tests out and works perfectly
    - On reboot, (pulling the plug) the unit can freeze or not on the "Welcome..." screen

    Thanks,
    Paul

It is pretty hard to diagnose those symptoms as being specifically drive related (or otherwise). When you are watching the TiVo, do you see any audio/video issues, such as pixellation, freezing, etc.?

Regarding the remote responsiveness: Have you tried bringing the unit to another location (another room/TV) to see if that helps?

Flasing front lights are are typically not a good sign...usually they indicate a motherboard issue...but when the units starts working, I presume the flashing stops?
