another R10 question

Hi all, new here and have a DVR R10 that my sister gave me. It was working fine at her place and she upgraded to HD. I brought the unit home and connected it, I have a round 1 LNB dish, and the unit said welcome, powering up and then nothing but a gray screen. Any thoughts on this one?
Also, will the tuner work by itself if the hard drive is damaged?

thanks anyway, i figured that a grey screen meant dead hard drive. don't know if it is worth salvaging or just toss it...

Any words at all on the grey screen? Have you tried the "little red button" inside the access card door?
